Commerzbank Says BoJ Rate Hike Is Crucial to Prevent Further Yen Pressure

The Japanese Yen could come under significant selling pressure if the Bank of Japan (BoJ) delays its next interest-rate increase, according to Commerzbank. The warning comes as Japanese inflation shows signs of strengthening and financial markets increasingly expect the central bank to raise rates in September.

Commerzbank analyst Volkmar Baur said recent inflation data from Tokyo has strengthened the case for another BoJ rate hike. Markets are currently assigning a high probability to a September move, although the central bank has not yet provided firm guidance on the timing.

Rising Japanese Inflation Strengthens the Case for a BoJ Rate Hike

Inflation in the Greater Tokyo area reached 1.9% in August, while inflation excluding energy and fresh food climbed to 2.0%. Commerzbank also highlighted accelerating inflation momentum over the past three months, particularly in the services sector.

The combination of persistent price pressures, elevated energy costs and expansionary fiscal policy is increasing expectations that the BoJ may need to continue normalising monetary policy.

The central bank’s policy rate currently stands at 1.00%, following its June rate increase from 0.75%. The market is therefore closely watching whether policymakers will deliver another increase at the September meeting.

Japanese Yen Faces Downside Risk if BoJ Delays

For the Forex market, the timing of the BoJ’s next decision could be particularly important. A delay could weaken investor confidence in the central bank’s willingness to respond to inflation, potentially increasing selling pressure on the Japanese Yen.

Commerzbank argues that a September rate hike is increasingly justified by economic conditions. The bank warned that failing to deliver could leave the JPY vulnerable to further depreciation.

The Yen has already faced considerable pressure this year, with USD/JPY trading at elevated levels. Japanese policymakers have also shown increasing concern about excessive currency weakness. Former senior Japanese currency official Mitsuhiro Furusawa recently said the Yen remained too weak and suggested that faster BoJ rate hikes could be necessary to support the currency.

What a BoJ Rate Hike Means for USD/JPY

A BoJ rate increase would generally be supportive for the Japanese Yen because higher Japanese interest rates can reduce the attractiveness of Yen-funded carry trades.

For USD/JPY, this could translate into downward pressure if investors increase expectations for further Japanese monetary tightening. However, the reaction will also depend on the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook and the wider US-Japan yield differential.

If the BoJ delivers a hike while maintaining a hawkish policy outlook, traders could increase bets on further Yen appreciation. Conversely, a smaller-than-expected move or cautious guidance could limit the Yen’s gains.

Global Markets Watch the BoJ’s Next Move

The BoJ decision is also relevant beyond the Japanese currency market. Changes in Japanese interest rates can influence global bond markets, equity valuations and carry-trade positioning.

Japan has historically been an important source of low-cost funding for global investors. A sustained rise in Japanese interest rates could encourage investors to reduce Yen-funded positions and repatriate capital, potentially creating volatility across global financial markets.

Fitch Ratings has similarly argued that further Yen appreciation is likely to require additional BoJ rate hikes as Japan’s reflation becomes more firmly established.

Forex Market Outlook for the Japanese Yen

The September BoJ meeting is becoming an increasingly important event for Forex traders. With inflation strengthening and market expectations for a rate hike elevated, the central bank faces pressure to provide clearer guidance on its monetary-policy path.

For now, Commerzbank’s message is straightforward: delaying the next rate increase could leave the Japanese Yen exposed to significant pressure. Traders will therefore monitor inflation data, BoJ communications, Japanese government bond yields and the USD/JPY exchange rate for clues about the next major move.

As global markets prepare for another potential shift in Japanese monetary policy, the Yen remains one of the key currencies to watch in the latest Forex News, FX news, and Global Markets landscape.
