Gold prices remained broadly steady on Thursday as traders positioned for Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s closely watched Jackson Hole speech, with the precious metal hovering near the $4,600-per-ounce level. Investors are looking for fresh clues about the U.S. interest-rate outlook, inflation risks and the Federal Reserve’s approach to monetary policy.

The latest move in gold comes after a volatile session triggered by U.S. inflation data. The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index rose 3.7% year over year in July, slightly above economists’ expectations of 3.6%. The data initially strengthened expectations that the Fed could keep monetary policy tighter for longer.

Gold Consolidates Near $4,600 as Fed Decision Looms

Spot gold was recently around $4,599.57 an ounce, up approximately 0.2% on Thursday, while U.S. gold futures held near $4,652.70. The modest recovery followed Wednesday’s decline, when spot gold fell more than 1% after the inflation figures reinforced concerns about future rate increases.

Higher interest rates typically create pressure on gold because the metal does not generate interest income. A more hawkish Federal Reserve can therefore support the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields while reducing the relative appeal of bullion.

However, gold has continued to find support from broader concerns surrounding U.S. debt levels and potential currency debasement. Reuters reported that gold had reached a three-month high earlier in the week, partly supported by market concerns surrounding the Treasury market and expectations for changing monetary-policy conditions.

Warsh’s Jackson Hole Speech in Focus

The biggest immediate catalyst for Forex News and precious-metals markets is Kevin Warsh’s first major Jackson Hole address as Federal Reserve Chair. Investors will be watching closely for clues about how the central bank views inflation, interest rates and developments in the U.S. bond market.

Markets are particularly interested in whether Warsh signals a willingness to maintain or increase restrictive policy if inflation remains above the Fed’s target. At the same time, investors want to understand how the Fed intends to respond to rising government debt, higher long-term yields and changing global capital flows.

According to FXStreet, traders are also watching the speech for its potential impact on the U.S. dollar. A hawkish message could strengthen the dollar and weigh on XAU/USD, while a more cautious or dovish tone could weaken the greenback and provide additional support for gold.

Geopolitical Risks Add Another Layer of Support

Beyond monetary policy, Geopolitics News remains an important factor for precious metals. Ongoing tensions involving Iran and developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz are contributing to uncertainty across financial and commodity markets. Reuters reported that Iran and Oman were still working on details of an agreement concerning the strategically important waterway.

Geopolitical uncertainty can increase demand for traditional safe-haven assets such as gold, particularly when investors are simultaneously concerned about inflation, currencies and global economic stability.

Oil markets are also being influenced by developments involving Iran, while the U.S. dollar has remained relatively firm ahead of the Jackson Hole event. This combination leaves gold sensitive to both macroeconomic and geopolitical headlines.

What Traders Are Watching Next

The next major directional move in gold could depend heavily on Warsh’s comments. A hawkish signal could push Treasury yields and the dollar higher, creating downside pressure for XAU/USD. Conversely, concerns about debt, financial-market stability or currency debasement could strengthen demand for gold even if interest rates remain elevated.

For FX news traders, the speech could also generate volatility across major currency pairs, particularly USD-related markets. EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY are likely to react to any meaningful change in expectations for the Fed’s policy path.

For now, gold remains caught between two competing forces: persistent inflation and the prospect of tighter U.S. monetary policy on one side, and safe-haven demand, debt concerns and geopolitical uncertainty on the other.

The Jackson Hole speech therefore represents a crucial near-term event for gold and global financial markets. Traders will be looking beyond individual comments for a clearer indication of how the new Fed leadership intends to balance inflation control, financial stability and the broader U.S. economic outlook.
