The Japanese yen is gaining renewed momentum against the US dollar as traders continue to unwind bearish yen positions ahead of the Bank of Japan’s September policy meeting. The latest positioning reversal has put USD/JPY under fresh pressure and raised the possibility of further yen strength if historical patterns repeat.
The move comes at a critical time for global currency markets, with the Bank of Japan (BoJ) scheduled to announce its policy decision on September 17–18, shortly after the Federal Reserve’s September meeting. Investors are therefore reassessing interest-rate expectations, carry trades and the outlook for the dollar-yen pair.
Yen Shorts Unwind at a Rapid Pace
One of the key drivers behind the latest USD/JPY decline is the rapid unwinding of yen short positions.
Traders had accumulated substantial bearish exposure to the Japanese currency during its prolonged period of weakness. However, the yen’s sharp recovery has forced many of those positions to be closed. When investors unwind a yen-short trade, they effectively need to buy the Japanese currency, creating additional upward pressure on the yen.
Recent market analysis indicates that the yen has experienced one of its largest positioning reversals in recent history. Previous episodes of rapid short-covering have often been followed by additional USD/JPY declines, although the scale and speed of any further move remain uncertain.
The development also reflects a broader shift in the carry-trade environment. Traders who previously borrowed yen at relatively low rates to invest in higher-yielding assets are becoming more cautious as Japanese monetary policy moves closer to normalisation.
BoJ Rate Decision Becomes the Next Major Catalyst
The Bank of Japan’s upcoming meeting is now central to the yen outlook.
Markets have increasingly priced the possibility of another 25-basis-point BoJ rate increase, while investors are also watching whether policymakers signal a faster pace of future tightening. The distinction is important: a rate hike that is already fully anticipated may have a limited impact, whereas stronger guidance on future increases could trigger another wave of yen buying.
The yen has already strengthened significantly in September, showing that traders are positioning ahead of the meeting rather than waiting for the official announcement. Reuters previously reported that the yen’s rally had begun disrupting popular carry-trade strategies as investors reassessed the outlook for Japanese monetary policy.
USD/JPY Technical Outlook Turns More Bearish
The technical picture has also shifted in favour of the yen.
USD/JPY has fallen sharply from its earlier 2026 highs, with the pair breaking important support levels as momentum accelerated. StoneX recently highlighted a broader bearish structure in USD/JPY and identified the 152 area as an important support region, while noting that a sustained break below key levels could open the door to another leg lower.
The speed of the decline is particularly important. A rapid move lower can trigger stop-loss orders from traders holding short-yen positions, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of yen buying and dollar selling.
However, the pair is also becoming increasingly stretched. That means traders should watch for periods of sharp corrective rebounds, particularly if the BoJ delivers a less hawkish message than markets expect.
Fed and BoJ Policy Gap Could Drive the Next Move
The Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan meetings arrive within a narrow window, making the interest-rate differential a major factor for USD/JPY.
A more hawkish BoJ combined with softer US monetary-policy expectations would favour the yen and could push USD/JPY lower. Conversely, if the BoJ disappoints markets with cautious guidance while US rate expectations remain elevated, the dollar could regain ground.
This makes the next several sessions particularly important for Forex markets.
What Traders Should Watch Next
The immediate focus will remain on BoJ guidance, US interest-rate expectations, yen positioning and USD/JPY technical support.
If yen short-covering continues and the BoJ reinforces expectations for further tightening, USD/JPY could face additional downside pressure. Historical positioning patterns also suggest that a large reversal in speculative yen exposure can precede further moves in the same direction.
For now, the key question is whether the current yen rally represents a temporary short squeeze or the beginning of a more durable change in the USD/JPY trend.
With the BoJ decision approaching, volatility is likely to remain elevated across the currency market.
