The EUR/USD pair remained relatively stable on Monday, holding above a key technical support level as traders shifted their attention toward two major events that could determine the currency pair’s next direction: the European Central Bank’s upcoming policy decision and the latest U.S. inflation data.
EUR/USD was trading near 1.1625 during European hours, with the pair moving broadly sideways after recent gains. The market’s cautious tone was partly influenced by the U.S. Labor Day holiday, which reduced activity in the American session.
Despite the lack of strong short-term momentum, the technical structure remains moderately constructive as EUR/USD continues to trade above its 20-day Exponential Moving Average.
20-Day EMA Remains Key Support
From a technical perspective, EUR/USD is currently holding around 1.1623, while the 20-day EMA is positioned near 1.1600. The pair’s ability to remain above this moving average suggests that the recent bullish bias has not yet been completely reversed.
The Relative Strength Index is around 56, indicating positive momentum without showing that the pair has entered overbought territory. A sustained break below the 1.1600 area could weaken the current bullish structure and expose the pair to deeper losses toward the psychological 1.1500 level.
On the upside, the August high near 1.1713 represents an important resistance zone. A decisive break above that level could strengthen bullish momentum and potentially bring the April high around 1.1849 into focus.
This creates a relatively clear technical framework for Forex traders: 1.1600 is an important support area, while 1.1713 remains a key upside hurdle.
ECB Decision Moves Into Focus
The technical setup, however, could quickly change once the European Central Bank announces its monetary policy decision later this week.
According to current market coverage, the ECB decision is expected to be the key event for European markets, with Deutsche Bank economists expecting a 25-basis-point rate increase that would take the deposit rate to 2.50%. Investors will also closely examine the ECB’s forward guidance for clues about whether additional tightening could follow.
A hawkish ECB could provide additional support to the euro by increasing expectations for higher European interest rates. That could push EUR/USD toward its recent highs.
However, a less aggressive policy signal could limit euro gains, particularly if U.S. monetary policy expectations remain hawkish.
US CPI Could Influence Fed Rate Expectations
The U.S. inflation report due later this week is another major catalyst for EUR/USD.
Recent stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data has increased expectations for Federal Reserve tightening. According to the latest market analysis, August nonfarm payrolls came in at 162,000 compared with expectations of 55,000, lifting market-implied odds of a September Fed rate hike to around 60% from approximately 50%.
That shift has helped limit downside pressure on the U.S. dollar. If upcoming CPI data shows persistent inflation, markets could further increase expectations for a hawkish Fed, potentially putting EUR/USD under renewed selling pressure.
Conversely, softer inflation could reduce rate-hike expectations and weaken the dollar, giving the euro more room to recover.
EUR/USD Faces a Fundamental and Technical Test
The currency pair is therefore approaching an important week in which technical levels and central-bank expectations could reinforce or contradict each other.
If the ECB delivers a hawkish message while U.S. CPI comes in softer than expected, EUR/USD could gain momentum above 1.1713. On the other hand, stronger U.S. inflation combined with a cautious ECB could strengthen the dollar and push the pair below the 20-day EMA.
The broader market backdrop is also important. Ongoing geopolitical tensions and elevated energy prices could influence inflation expectations on both sides of the Atlantic, adding another layer of uncertainty to central-bank policy.
For Forex traders, the immediate focus is therefore on 1.1600 support, 1.1713 resistance, the ECB decision and U.S. CPI data.
As long as EUR/USD remains above its 20-day EMA, the technical bias remains cautiously positive. However, with major central-bank and inflation events approaching, traders should expect volatility to increase as markets reassess the relative policy outlook for the European Central Bank and Federal Reserve.
