The Japanese Yen remained close to its August highs against the US Dollar on Friday as currency traders turned their attention to the highly anticipated US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report. The USD/JPY pair attracted some buyers after its recent sharp decline, but the broader outlook remains tilted toward Yen strength as expectations for a Bank of Japan (BoJ) rate hike increase and markets reassess the Federal Reserve’s policy path.
The Japanese Yen has recorded one of its strongest weekly performances in recent months. Reuters reported that the currency was on track for its strongest week in more than a month, gaining around 2.5% against the US Dollar. The move reflects growing expectations that the BoJ could raise interest rates at its September 17–18 policy meeting.
US NFP Becomes the Main Market Catalyst
The focus is now shifting to the US employment report, which could determine the next major move in USD/JPY. Traders are looking for fresh evidence about the strength of the American labour market and how that could influence Federal Reserve interest-rate expectations.
Recent comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller have reduced expectations for a September rate increase. Reuters reported that the probability of a September Fed hike had fallen to around 50%, while the US Dollar Index remained relatively stable ahead of the payrolls data.
A stronger-than-expected NFP report could support the US Dollar by encouraging traders to price a more restrictive Federal Reserve policy. Higher US yields could then provide temporary support to USD/JPY.
However, a weaker employment reading could reinforce expectations for a less aggressive Fed, potentially pushing Treasury yields and the US Dollar lower. Such a scenario could provide additional support to the Japanese Yen.
BoJ Expectations Strengthen Yen
The Yen’s recent gains are also being driven by changing expectations surrounding the Bank of Japan. Investors increasingly expect Japanese policymakers to continue normalising monetary policy as economic conditions and inflation allow.
A higher BoJ interest rate could narrow the yield gap between Japan and the United States, making Yen-denominated assets more attractive. It could also reduce the appeal of borrowing in Yen to invest in higher-yielding assets elsewhere, potentially putting pressure on carry trades.
The Yen’s recent appreciation has therefore been more than a simple reaction to US Dollar weakness. Markets are increasingly positioning for a potentially more hawkish BoJ.
Intervention Risk Remains in Focus
Currency intervention is another important factor for USD/JPY traders. Japan’s top currency official, Atsushi Mimura, said on Friday that authorities remain vigilant about exchange-rate movements and are maintaining close communication with US officials.
The comments came after the Yen strengthened sharply against the Dollar, increasing speculation that Japanese authorities could intervene again if currency movements become excessively volatile. However, there has been no official confirmation that recent Yen gains were caused by intervention.
Japan and the United States had already agreed to continue coordinating on orderly Yen movements, highlighting the importance of exchange-rate stability for both economies.
USD/JPY Outlook
For Forex traders, the combination of US NFP uncertainty, Fed expectations, BoJ policy and intervention risks makes USD/JPY one of the most closely watched currency pairs.
A strong US jobs report could allow USD/JPY to recover from recent losses, particularly if US Treasury yields rise. Conversely, weak employment data combined with stronger BoJ expectations could increase downside pressure on the currency pair and push the Japanese Yen toward new short-term highs.
Beyond USD/JPY, the Yen’s performance could also influence broader risk sentiment. The currency is widely viewed as a safe-haven asset, meaning stronger geopolitical uncertainty or weaker global risk appetite could further increase demand for the Yen.
Markets will therefore be watching the US NFP release closely for clues about the Federal Reserve’s next move. At the same time, traders will monitor Japanese official comments and BoJ expectations for signs that the Yen’s recent rally could continue.
